Food 360 at The Edible Garden Show - Sunday 20th March

Probe has hailed the Edible Garden Show as an impressive start for the new Square Metre Garden with sales at 38 over the three days of the new event.

Probe and East Yorkshire inventor Robin Rose launched the product at the Show at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, hailing it as the "new and exciting way to grow your own".

Square Metre Gardening was the flagship feature of the Stand 325, a joint venture between Probe’s Food 360 project and the East Yorkshire firm Higrow. The new product was also the subject in The Potting Shed where Robin and Food 360 co-ordinator Adrian Fisher explained the background to Square Metre Gardening.

Chef Gerard Baker completed the weekend for Probe by staging an afternoon cookery demonstration at the WI Theatre. The historian for the BBC’s Hairy Bikers created dishes featuring squid, herbs and rhubarb.

The organisers, Channell Events, have already announced the dates of next year’s show, again to be held at Stoneleigh Park. It will be from 16th-19th March. Spokeswoman Bev Channell said: "The feedback’s been great and some stalls have been displaying "sold out" signs on the last day, which is really encouraging as it was a first show and demonstrates how popular it’s been."

Food 360 at The Edible Garden Show - Saturday 19th March

Sales of the new Square Metre Garden hit double figures on the second and busiest day so far of the Edible Garden Show

Sales of the new Square Metre Garden hit double figures on the second and busiest day so far of the Edible Garden Show at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.

The Saturday saw Probe (Hull) Ltd and Higrow Yorkshire enjoy another successful day on Stand 325 and at presentations across the day.

Food 360 cook demonstrator Margaret Hickling delivered a stunning performance at the WI Cookery Theatre with four dishes – Cheesy Cauliflower Bake, Cheese and Herb Dip, Rhubarb Coconut Pots and Rhubarb Tart. It was Food 360’s first presentation at the Cookery Theatre. She said: “It seemed to go well and I knew that the four recipes would work in the time I had, 40 minutes. I was a little wary of the oven at first, though! The audience seemed interested and they all went away with copies of the recipes.”

Show audiences saw Food 360 co-ordinator Adrian Fisher and inventor Robin Rose deliver presentations on Accessible Gardening and the concept of Square Metre Gardening, the new product which brought Probe and Robin Rose together for the Edible Garden Show. They revealed that some 85% of the food we eat as a nation is imported and that the public could try some simple steps to grow their own and help cut that figure.

Among the thousands of people who came through the doors at Stoneleigh Park today were a party of nearly 50 people, including Probe General Manager Steve Alltoft. Steve said: “This is Probe punching above its weight at a national show for the first time in a new area for us - food. I felt very proud of what the team has achieved, including Margaret at the Cookery Theatre. I was also delighted to sell a Square Metre Garden on the stand!”

The Edible Garden Show continues on Sunday when Gerard Baker, the historian for the BBC’s Hairy Bikers, will be cooking towards the end of the day for Food 360 at the WI Cookery Theatre.
Probe's Food 360 at The Edible Garden Show - Friday 18th March

High Profile Launch for new Food Garden product.

The launch of Square Metre Gardening by Probe and inventor Robin Rose has had a high-profile start at the first-ever Edible Garden Show. Food Minister James Paice and BBC TV gardening presenter James Wong gave their backing to the concept as they visited the Stand 325 at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on Friday 18th March. .

The Minister opened the Show along with TV presenter Diarmuid Gavin and then toured the event, visiting the Food 360/Higrow stand to meet Food 360 Project Co-ordinator Adrian Fisher and Square Metre Gardening inventor Robin Rose. Mr Paice said: “It’s an excellent idea, which shows you don’t need any land to grow food and it’s good for the environment.”

James Wong bought preserves - red pepper and sundried tomato chutney and Victoria plum made by East Hull-based VKP Preserves when he came to the Stand. The 29 year old TV presenter, who made a presentation to a packed audience on Incredible Edibles during the day, added his support to the Square Metre Gardening idea: “It’s really exciting. As gardens get smaller, you need to be innovative about space and this is the modern way with some kind of simple kit for people.”

Some seven square metre gardening kits were sold on the first day, the first to a couple from Evesham in Worcestershire and there were further sales following a lunchtime presentation by Adrian Fisher and Robin Rose at “The Potting Shed” in the Show. They also ended the day with a presentation on Accessible Gardening in the Experts’ Theatre.

Edible Garden Show organiser Bev Channell hailed the first day: “People have been pleasantly surprised by the Show and advance ticket sales for tomorrow are even higher than today. There’s been a lot of great feedback which proves this event has been much needed.”

Saturday also sees a cookery demonstration by Food 360’s Margaret Hickling at 3pm as well as Adrian and Robin’s Accessible Gardening presentation (10.15am) and their Potting Shed demonstration.

The Show continues until Sunday 21st March. Photos of Day 1 below...
