Caress Beauty Launches with Support from Probe - June 2011
Lucy Reed can chart her passion for make-up and nails back to schooldays, as with many girls, but she would also apply her creativity to the hands of her school friends at South Holderness.

Less than a decade later, the 24-year-old beauty therapist is running her own business, having decided during a travelling holiday in Greece to return to the UK to her native East Yorkshire and go it alone. Lucy, of Hedon, has taken previously-vacant space within Carmichael’s hair salon on Holderness Road to launch Caress Beauty.

It is a far cry from leaving school and spending four years working for an insurance company. Lucy eventually decided that office life was not going to suit her and took a job within a salon before progressing to a larger business in Hedon.

Lucy attended Hull College and studied a BTEC National Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Related Sciences and an NVQ in Nail Technology. At Caress she offers: manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements, waxing, tinting and spray tanning with popular treatments being facials and massage. She also offers tailor-made packages upon consultation, particularly for weddings and the school “Proms” season.

“I like to see results with the health and well-being of clients, as important as looking good. Beauty therapy is all about how people feel on the inside as well as out. In the future of Caress I would like to offer more advanced skincare and also eventually teach beauty.

“At the time I thought it was a brave decision to start on my own but I welcomed the challenge and feel proud of my achievements to date. One of my favourite lessons at school was Business Studies which I have found helpful within my venture. I’ve used my life savings and an inheritance from my family to buy what I need and have set up a new client base.

“I feel there was a calling for me to go into the beauty industry as my grandparents ran a hair salon with two generations of the family working there.”

For Lucy it is a good industry to be in as you always need to be fully committed and focused.

As well as advice from a family member who works in marketing, Lucy has been helped by Probe (Hull) Ltd, part of the Hull Enterprise Partnership, to produce a business plan and to access funding from the citywide ‘Grow’ Project which is supported by Hull City Council and partners across the city.
